We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential. ~Ellen Goodman
In the month of January, we can get down on ourselves because we're looking at all that's wrong in our lives--all the ways we are not enough. What if we choose to see our strengths? What if we look at what brings us joy and makes us come alive? We all need the energy of joy to give us momentum. It takes some reflection to note what gives us joy and make sure we give time to those things. Maybe it's one-on-one time with precious people in your life, dancing to music when no one's watching, or playing board games, Maybe it's getting outdoors, volunteering, or actually doing a project you've been procrastinating on. Or maybe it's making a list of what you're thankful for or good at.
It's easy to become discouraged when we just try to get better at something and fail to spend time working in our strengths as well. Our strengths and weaknesses make us unique. .We may not be able to ignore our weaknesses, but neither should we ignore the potential inside of us. That potential is what brings us joy and adds value to everyone around us. Each of us is "fearfully and wonderfully" made and celebrating that is good for all of us!
