I have always been attracted to the arts--any kind of art. I found that I could easily express myself (whether music, art, dance, acting). I did a lot of piano growing up, along with singing at my church. It wasn’t until High School that I really got into to acting, which drove me to study theatre in University. I started writing music and lyrics when I was around 12, but started seriously writing in high school. Training wise, I have taken piano, guitar, and voice lessons. I have had acting lessons, studied mime, improv and set design. I have been in two fringe shows as a supporting lead, and have auditioned for many musical shows around Winnipeg. I started taking dance only four years ago but caught on so quick my instructor was so surprised. I got gold at festival in a solo jazz dance that I choreographed myself.
I am a PK (pastor’s kid), and grew up in church culture. I was 7 years old when I was baptized and accepted Jesus to be my Savior. When I was 15, I had a crazy experience where God poured out His presence on me during a 4-hour worship service and since then I have been a lover and seeker of His presence. This event has shaped my life so much that it affects everything I do now. I believe that God has called me to be sensitive to his spirit moving--that I am a leader who is meant to lead people into His presence so that they may experience Him more. My songs are not mine but His. I am merely the temple that gets to hold them for His glory (if that makes sense). When He calls me I answer, where He goes I go. Sometimes I lose focus but I am human. His grace brings me back. God humbles me every day. I want my life to be so Spirit-led that I can act on anything He asks of me at anytime!
Involvement at Masterworks
I have been teaching theatre, jazz and hip hop for four years with X-Company outside of Winnipeg and I have led teams/productions at my church. A woman named Jen (who teaches at Masterworks) attended my church while all of this was going on and put in a good word for me. I was drawn to Masterworks for two reasons:
I have no idea how I juggle all of this. God has been amazing at making my life fit around all these different outlets. I have been blessed by so many opportunities to be a part of artistic creations or teaching or worship ministries and I LOVE IT!
Story of “Presence”—the CD
It’s quite funny. I didn’t do anything but be obedient to God. A couple of years ago I got frustrated with God because my music wasn’t going anywhere. So I asked Him what I should do. That’s when the door opened for me to start leading some of my own worship songs at my church. After a while I felt God say I need to record some on my computer. So I did. They were very rough and raw recordings, but they did the job. After this I would write full-out emails to record labels, then delete them because it didn’t sit right with my spirit--which made me even more frustrated. One day I got a random call form this guy in Toronto saying, “Hey, I am Colvin Chambers from Redeeming Music. We heard you do music; call us back. This is a chance for a record deal.” So I called him back and sent him my really bad recordings. Two hours later, he called me and said, “You were the guy we were looking for.” He sent me a contract. Six months later, I signed it. Two years later, here we are producing our first album out of three. It has been A CRAZY RIDE!
Hope for this project?
My hope is that people won’t hear my voice, but God’s voice.
