This is my 3rd year as a Masterworks parent, and I'm just finding out what B-sides is, both in the meaning of the word, and the event itself! In case anyone else is in the dark, I thought I would enlighten everyone with this blog post.
The term "B-side" refers to the other side of the record, where an artist would often record songs of a more personal nature, re-mixes, instrumentals etc. not expected to become hits.
Masterworks' B-sides show is also more.artsy, eclectic, and intimate than the year-end recital. While recital is the main focus, this show contains treasures you won't see at recital, including: student choreography and teacher dances (although not this year). This is a show where choreographers have more freedom, as there's no theme to follow. It's an opportunity for the advanced dancers to share. The performance team is featured, plus the linking team, the level 3 (advanced) classes, and the Hip Hop team, plus Musical Theatre will showcase a number from their upcoming Spring Performance.
Just as with the Christmas show, B-sides is only about an hour long--just right. Everyone that goes, seems to love it.
Another feature of the evening is collaboration with other artists/musicians. This year, Masterworks is opening the evening with the "Asante Choir". (Asante Ministries Canada is a family of individuals and organizations caring for orphans, widows, and the needy in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. Their dream is to see a new generation of Africans become agents of change by overcoming life’s challenges of poverty, illiteracy and disease). "The Choir is dedicated to spreading love, hope and joy while raising awareness for the desperate plight of orphans and other vulnerable children. Their colourful clothing, pounding drums and sweet voices demonstrate their hopes and dreams for a brighter future. Their inspirational stories of resilience have instilled hope in the hearts of all those who have seen them perform". (see Asante). Note: Masterworks is hosting them overnight and appreciates help with bedding, food, and costs. See front desk or call 946-5617.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. They can be purchased online for about $9 ($9.08 to be exact). Any profits from ticket sales go towards the summer camp subsidy program.
There will be a "love" offering for the choir to help them in their mission, as well.
