What, would you say, is your overall view of the importance of the arts (in your life and/or in the life of a society in general).
Having the arts is so important to our society because it is what drives our passions and helps us explore what we cannot do on paper or in our heads. It gives a chance for creative expression and I can't help but think of all the beauty that comes from the arts, in any form.
What is your educational background?
I am a recent graduate of the School of Contemporary Dancers (2014) and have a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Winnipeg.
I completed RWB's teacher-training summer seminar in 2008.
What is your history with Masterworks Studio?
I started taking classes at Masterworks when I was eight years old and continued into my teen years.
What is your position with Masterworks currently?
I am currently an Instructor, the Supervisor of Tuesday nights and the Outreach Co-ordinator.
How long have you had this position? Do you have any other roles?
I have been a teacher at Masterworks for eight years. I started out teaching Hip Hop and then after a few years was teaching Jazz and Modern. As I went through the School of Contemporary Dancers, program I began focusing solely on Modern.
I have been supervising Tuesday Nights for three years and this is my first year in the Outreach Co-ordinating role.
What does your job entail?
If I am not teaching, my job includes making sure our Friday night drop-in programs for inner -city youth are running and doing well. I also set up after school dance programs for schools in the neighbourhood. We currently have teachers teaching at Machray Elementary School and Faraday Elementary School. I co-ordinate workshops for day-cares as well as some homeschooling programs. We are in our second year partnering with St. Aidan's Christian school, which is run out of Inner City Youth Alive and Calvary Temple, serving inner-city kids of about ten different nations presently. Every Friday this group comes to Masterworks to learn Ballet, Jazz, and Hip Hop from some of our amazing teachers.
What have been some of the highlights for you?
A highlight this year would be seeing a returning student that is in our sponsorship program excelling in his classes. He has been taking Hip Hop for three years and this year was invited to the higher level where he will go to The Manitoba Dance Festival and compete with his class. He also joined art and is involved in our Friday Drop-In program. At the beginning of the year he was so excited that he got to come to YFC three times per week. I love that this has become such a fun and safe place for him.
What is your vision/mission for what you oversee?
I would like to see us teaching in more schools around the neighbourhood and to grow in volunteers so we can offer more free rides and classes to youth in our community.
