What does your job entail?
This is one of the most diverse positions I have ever worked. Part of my job entails running the musical theatre department- finding material to perform; directing our yearly musical and producing the show. I also am in charge of the work for trade and volunteer programs here at Masterworks. I match parents with a passion to serve our community with the right role, whether it be driving, cleaning, helping with costumes or fundraising. I also help Kristie with the Christmas show, B-Sides, SHINE, and Recital. I organize picture night, the clothing order, and send a whole lot of emails. On Thursdays I supervise
What have been some of the highlights for you?
Annie Jr. was a huge highlight for me. My students worked so hard to put together a brilliant show and it was just the most surreal, amazing experience. Thursday nights have also been a highlight. I love breathe- it's so special being allowed into the girls' lives. The relationships I've been able to build with students and staff is definitely one of my favourite parts of the job so far.
What is your vision/mission for what you oversee?
I love that our mission is to make dance, art and faith accessible to all regardless of financial status or level of skill. With musical theatre, I would add to our statement by saying that I would like to see my students excel to the highest level possible and be able to go on and perform professionally if they so desire. Musical theatre as a profession can be inaccessible by nature because it requires intensive study in three disciplines. I hope that we are able to provide high quality education in all three disciplines (voice, dance, and acting) some day at an affordable price.
What other projects or artistic ventures are you part of outside of Masterworks? Describe.
Outside of Masterworks I am a freelance director, actor and educator. I was fortunate to begin my teaching career with Manitoba Theatre for Young People where I teach musical theatre and junior acting. I have been fortunate to apprentice direct at both Rainbow Stage and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. I was selected as one of 18 emerging artists from across Canada to perform at the Young Innovators Lab last September at Nightwood Theatre in Toronto, ON. I was also selected as one of twenty-five directors from across the world to participate in the Director's Lab North which is held annually at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto last June. Currently, I am in pre-production to direct a beautiful little show for the Fringe Festival, and then join Rainbow Stage to apprentice direct on Sister Act. It's an exciting time for me and I am very grateful for the opportunities that have opened up. I have always enjoyed training from professors and instructors who are working actively in the business. I think it keeps you on your toes as an instructor and keeps the work you do fresh and current.
What other communities are you part of?
I am a member of Eastview Community Church and attend/ help out at our downtown campus, One88. I recently directed a dinner theatre production of It's a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play. It was a very collaborative event and utilized members of both communities (Eastview and One88). It is a project I am very proud of because of it's inclusiveness and diverse cast, crew and personnel.
Would you like to introduce your spouse/kids to the Masterworks family?
My husband's name is Chad, and he is a real estate agent for Ethos Realty. He's pretty great and totally balances me out. He is patient when I am frantic. He is calm when I am anxious. He is the kindest person you will ever meet. And he is also so supportive of what I do. He's always willing to jump in and lend a hand when a hand is needed. I couldn't do this without him!
Anyone you’d like to particularly thank?
Thanks to my students who keep coming back every year! It's so encouraging to have their enthusiasm and passion. And to all my prayer and financial partners- we literally could not do what we do without their support. If you want to learn more about how to partner with us either through prayer or financially, call 204-946-5617.
A little known fact? Hobby?
I've run a full marathon--I love to run! And swim. I LOVE swimming. And I'm learning to play the Ukulele.
